Essays on equality in america

The desire for equality is one everpresent in American society. We see this intention presented throughout our history, branching all the way back to our country’s founders. The intent for equality is clear, however, we continue to come short of this goal after years and years as a country.

The popular meaning of the term equality is that all men are equal and all should be entitled to identity of treatment and income. Those who subscribe to this meaning of equality, assert that all men are born equal and nature has willed them to remain so.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…."

The United States is where democracy and equality are held to the highest precedence. Although America was founded on the ideals of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, it has betrayed these values a countless number of times especially in regarding the inequality of African Americans, Native Americans, and women.
